Ben Dickinson - PE Teacher and BTEC Sports Analysis Lecturer

    St Christopher's School - Bahrain

St Christopher's is a British school based in Bahrain. They educate students using British curriculums.

They strive for the highest possible standards and are continuously looking for better, smarter and more effective ways for people to learn...

    The Background

Ben is a PE (Physical Education) teacher at St Christopher's School.

As well as teaching PE, Ben also runs the BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) sports program for 16+ year old students.

St Christopher's have introduced Sports Analysis as part of their BTEC curriculum as a way of preparing students who wanted careers in sports and sports science for further education, university, and employment.

    The Results

Initially students were taught to analyze soccer games using the standard iSportsAnalysis performance indicators, and they quickly moved on to analyzing other sports such as rugby and volleyball.

Students quickly learned to use iSportsAnalysis and were tagging/coding games outside of school hours.

The students engaged with each other regarding aspects of their game analysis, and were happy to share what they had learned about the performances in the games they were analyzing.

They absolutely loved using iSportsAnalysis, it was intuitive, and there were video tutorials if they got stuck.
They were able to draw on their videos and use the online messaging system to communicate outside the classroom setting.

Some students changed their career paths because of their new-found love of analyzing sports; some who wanted to go into law decided to specialize is sports law!

    The Process

Videoed games were uploaded to iSportsAnalysis by Ben. The students were given permission to sign-in to their iSportsAnalysis account and access the tools they needed to analyze the performances of the teams playing.

Initially students were asked to use the default performance indicators to analyze the uploaded games, they quickly moved on to creating their own set of performance indicators for their own sports based on KPIs set by Ben.

Each student's analysis was unique to them and was only viewable by themselves and the teacher.
This made the analysis private; it also made the communication between the teacher and students private.
